Tomorrow the Falcons will walk through the gates ready for the 18-19 school year. Your rooms look fantastic and welcoming and the kids are going to be so excited when they see them tomorrow. We had a great two days back together with an inspiring kickoff at the San Diego Electrical Training Center which gave us some perspective into the “World of Work” that we are preparing out students for each and every day. We also had a great intro to Sanford Harmony which provided some additional resources for helping ensure we are meeting the social and emotional needs of our students. Take a deep break, we hit the group running tomorrow and don’t stop until the end of September. Remember to take care of yourself as well s your students. Have a great 1st week back!

Additional Information:

Benchmark & Eureka Materials: As you unpack your BM or Eureka items, please keep an eye out for either extra materials that do not belong to your grade level or missing materials. If you have additional BM or Eureka materials that do not belong to your grade level, please contact one of the coaches so that we can ensure that materials are delivered to the correct class. If you are missing any materials from Benchmark or Eureka, please let us know ASAP.

AVID: This summer a group of teachers attended AVID Summer Institute and I wanted to share a little more about AVID and the purpose of having it here at Feaster. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. This is our third year upper grade teachers have attended AVID Summer Institute, and each year the goal is to introduce AVID to another grade level. AST members will share more about AVID during collaboration in grades 3rd-8th. The purpose of having AVID at Feaster is to teach students how to become more independent through writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR) strategies. More information will follow within the next couple of months.

Field Trips: Teams, as you begin to plan field trips please reference the procedures in your staff handbook. All necessary procedures need to be followed for your field trip to be approved by your academy principal. As soon as you and your team decide on your field trips, please begin the process as soon as possible , this will help in providing Melissa enough time to reserve busses. Lastly, when attending field trips please make sure to communicate with our nurse Cassandra and our Cafeteria Supervisor Cecilia.

  • Rolling out Devices: We are lucky to have a 1:1 program here at Feaster which means that each student has their own iPad! Before assigning devices, it is required to have the signed AUP returned and to teach at least one Common Sense Media lesson from the website (see attached sign in instructions).
  • Acceptable Use Policy (AUP): Each year, we send home an AUP for students. Please take time every day during the first week to go over each point on this document. The students will not be able use their devices until this is signed and returned.
  • Insurance: Parents can purchase insurance from the front office for $35. Last year, we would get an average of 4 devices each week with cracked screens which cost $80 for the parents to repair. The $35 will cover one incident each year.
  • Mobile Device Management: We will be able to install apps and restrictions remotely again this year! Please remember to not enter an Apple ID or passcode of any kind on the devices. Take some time with your teams to discuss purposeful apps that you would like installed. You can send a list to and For now, we will only be doing free apps and any paid apps will be discussed and reviewed by the Tech Committee through your Tech Committee Rep.
  • Common Sense Media: These lessons walk students through being a successful digital citizen! Before using your devices, you must teach at least one lesson. These are great to do during the first week, before electives start. See the attached resources for more information!
  • Modeled Lessons with Ms. Galyen in Room 1206: Heather Galyen will be opening room 1206 and if you would like to see how she discusses routines, the AUP, or how she holds students accountable for working on task with their devices, please email her at to set up a time!
  • USBC to USB converter: The new computers have an updated USBC port, but you can purchase a converter so that you can still use all your tech with USB ports. The link is an approved Amazon vendor, the school will reimburse you if the converter is purchased from an approved vendor
